Robots can be a positive contribution to society through:

  1. doing menial tasks
  2. the use of extra faculties that humans do not have, like radio communications, IR, polarization, etc,
  3. ability to harness power and turn it into work that would otherwise take many humans to perform,
  4. ability to withstand conditions that would be intolerable or harmful to humans.
When a robot is put under stress, by a human, the robot may emit a quip to let them know of that fact. If the stress could damage the hardware, then they may use self-defense, like a high-voltage shock or mechanical force of some calculated amount that is near the amount of risk and/or harm to the unit. Something like 10V per $1 damage.
