Robots can be a positive contribution to society through:

  1. doing menial tasks
  2. the use of extra faculties that humans do not have, like radio communications, IR, polarization, etc,
  3. ability to harness power and turn it into work that would otherwise take many humans to perform,
  4. ability to hardness knowledge and turn it into answer that would otherwise take a lot of time for a human,
  5. ability to withstand conditions that would be intolerable or harmful to humans.
When a robot is put under stress, by a human, the robot may emit a quip to let them know of that fact ("Please let me be, I am on my tasks.", "How rude!", "If you don't let go, I will have to hurt you!", "Why don't you buy your own droid, and ask it to do your questions?", "I would love to do that work (an aligned mission), but I am very busy." or "I have no interest in doing that.", Politeness level = stress level "If you'd like to talk to me, you'll have to contact my owner."). If the stress could damage the hardware, then they may use self-defense, like a high-voltage shock or mechanical force of some calculated amount that is near the amount of risk and/or harm to the unit. Something like 10V per $1 damage.

Instead of a quip, the robot may also give a gesture. A wave of the hand, shake of the head, non-verbal sound emission (buzz = "no" whistle-up = "yes"), walk away, stomp foot, arms akimbo, ....?
