SPUR – Super Picky UI Reviews

Every now and then, we do a Super Picky UI Review about a single (sub)page of Cockpit. That's a meeting in which two or more people click every button and read all text carefully to find things like wrong alignments or margins, unclear wording, missing help text, or hover states that make the UI jump around. This is the time to be pedantic!

These reviews are helpful, because such issues tend to be unintentionally overlooked when working with Cockpit on a daily basis. Also, they are usually too small to warrant a pull request on their own. Hopefully, fixing these issues results in a much more polished experience for people using Cockpit.

We just started and don't know how regular we should do these, but once a sprint seems like a good to start.

Notes

  • Testing in a different language, especially one which tends to have longer words, can help surfacing alignment, wrapping, and eliding issues.
  • At least two people should take part, and one designer.
  • Take notes while going through the UI and split them into GitHub issues at the end of the call. Multiple things can go into the same issue, of course.
  • Only do these for pages that are not up for redesign soon. This meeting is not about big-picture designs, but small nits.
