There are many different types of ships in Naev. This page gives a spoiler-free list of the different ship classes and examples of ships.

Yacht (ultra-light)

Small personal ships. There are high-end and low-end designs.

  • Purposes:

    • Personal transport
    • Fast transport of tiny quantities of fret or passengers
  • Ships of this class:

    • Llama (default)
    • Gawain (default)

Courier (light)

Fast transport ships.

  • Purposes:

    • Fast transport of small quantities of fret or passengers
  • Ships of this class:

    • Koala (default)
    • Quicksilver (default)

Freighter (medium-heavy)

Medium transport ships.

  • Purposes:

    • Transport consequent quantities of fret
    • Transport troops (far from the front-line)
  • Ships of this class:

    • Mule (default)

Armoured Transport (medium-heavy)

Ships designed to supply settlements in dangerous zones of space. They are also used by the military to transport ground forces.

  • Purposes:

    • Transport consequent quantities of fret in dangerous areas
    • Transport troops (close to the front-line)
  • Ships of this class:

    • Rhino and variant (default, Pirate)

Bulk Freighter (heavy or superheavy?)

Huge and slow ships that transport lots of cargo.

  • Purposes:

    • Transport big quantities of fret
    • Transport troops
  • No Ship of this class :'(

Scout (ultralight)

Small ships used for exploration, or as radar cover for a fleet.

  • Purposes:

    • Exploration
    • Overseeing
    • Localization of hostile ships
    • Personal transport
  • Ships of this class:

    • Schroedinger (default)
    • Scout Drone (Za'lek)

Interceptor (ultralight)

Small ships used to intercept quick targets that are unable to defend themselves.

  • Purposes:

    • Personal transport
    • Police
    • Localization of hostile ships
    • Interception of fleeing hostiles
    • Harassment
    • Easier to transport in a Carrier
    • Regular fight
  • Good against

    • Bombers
  • Bad against everyone else

  • Ships of this class:

Fighter (light)

Small multi-usage ships. A launcher can be installed on most of them to make them able to harass heavier ships or to neutralize faster ships. They can otherwise carry highly devastating dogfight weaponry.

  • Purposes:

    • Regular fight
    • Harassment
  • Good against:

    • Interceptors
    • Bombers
  • Bad against:

    • Corvettes
  • Ships of this class:

Bomber (light)

Small anti-heavy ships. They use torpedoes to neutralize heavy ships during massive battles or surprise attacks. Other than that, they have little use as they are mainly less-manoeuvrable fighters.

  • Purposes:

    • Support
    • Harassment
  • Good against:

    • Cruisers
    • Battleships
    • Carriers
  • Bad against:

    • Interceptors
    • Fighters
    • Corvettes
  • Ships of this class:

Corvette (medium)

Medium multi-usage ships. They can be equipped with launchers in order to play the role of a bomber (without being vulnerable to Interceptors). They can also use cannons to protect their allied bombers, or to destroy enemy bombers.

  • Purposes:

    • Regular fight
    • Support
  • Good against:

    • Interceptors
    • Fighters
    • Bombers
    • Cruisers (Bomber corvette)
    • Battleships (Bomber corvette)
    • Carriers (Bomber corvette)
  • Bad against:

    • Destroyers
    • Fighters (Bomber corvette)
  • Ships of this class:

Destroyer (medium-heavy)

Destroyers tend to use cannons against corvettes and above, and turrets against smaller foes. They are primary designed to track and destroy corvettes.

  • Purposes:

    • Regular fight
  • Good against:

    • Corvettes
  • Bad against:

    • Cruisers
    • Battleships
  • Ships of this class:

Cruiser (heavy)

Massive firepower ships. They mainly use their turrets to shoot at Destroyers and Cruisers. In a big battle, their goal is often to find a way to the support ships (Carriers, Transports...) in order to neutralize them.

  • Purposes:

    • Regular fight
    • Support
  • Good against:

    • Destroyers
    • Carriers
  • Bad against:

    • Bombers
    • Battleships
  • Ships of this class:

Battleship (super-heavy)

Highly Armored ships. They deal as much damage as possible to Destroyers and bigger ships with their turrets, while their thick armour allows them to stay exposed to enemy fire for long periods.

  • Purposes:

    • Regular fight
  • Good against:

    • Destroyers
    • Cruisers
    • Carriers
  • Bad against:

    • Bombers
  • Ships of this class:

Carrier (super-heavy)

These ships have a strategic importance as they supply the light ships, but have no strong offensive capabilities.

  • Purposes:

    • Mobile base for light (and ultralight) ships
    • Command
    • Transport troops and equipment
  • Ships of this class:
