If you have any questions that are not answered by this wiki, you can reach out to your connector associate or contact us on Piazza.

Course / teaching materials

Q: What connectors are being offered this semester?

You can see connector course topics and other information here.

Q: Where can I find current materials for Data 8 (Foundations of Data Science)?

A: The site for the Foundations course is data8.org. The current semester's site has the syllabus, topics covered class by class, sample notebooks, homeworks, etc.

The online textbook for Data 8 is at inferentialthinking.com.

Q: Where can I find old materials for Data 8?

A: Here's a list of older versions.

Q: Where can I find some example notebooks?

A: Example notebooks: For examples of notebooks, you can see the table demos or find all raw notebooks for the textbook here. The .ipynb files on these pages are the ones of interest. The Foundations class uses notebooks for lectures, labs, and projects.

Q: How can I more closely follow the Data 8 class material?

A: Most of the material will mimic the previous semesters of Data 8. However, some material may change a little (at least in timing if not in content). Those decisions will be made by the instructor close to real time. The best bet is to look at the outline from the syllabus and then find the corresponding sections in the textbook to see how the material is covered. The textbook is basically the lecture notes from last semester.

Administrative Stuff

Q: How do I get set up on bCourses or other campus-wide systems?

A: Your home department needs to enter you as instructor for the course and give you instructions for how they use campus-wide systems. If your connector is an L&S 88, your "home department" is the Data Science program, and you can just contact us.

Q: What should I do if students want to join my connector without taking Data 8?

A: Our main way of teaching python/notebook/etc. skills is the Data 8 course. If the student has previously taken Data 8, then it shouldn't be a problem. If they have not taken Data 8, then:

  1. Remind them that Data 8 is a pre/co-requisite for a connector.
  1. If they really want to join, then the instructor can make a personal judgment about whether to include them, as it's in the instructor's discretion. We'd recommend that you give some kind of personal assessment, written exam, etc. to make sure that it won't create a lot of extra work for the instructor.

Q: Where is the home page for the Data Science education program?

We're at [data.berkeley.edu/education] (http://data.berkeley.edu/education).
