Notes: Many people will NOT want to connect neighbors to their professional or social lives online, while others will prefer to simply be found and friended on Facebook. Neighborly should work for either kind of person.

Be a Block Leader

Do you like to connect people? Bring neighbors together?

Whether you just do this or you are part of an official block club or neighborhood watch, we have some special tools for you.

1. Share e-mail updates easily with delivery map – Help see who you are reaching and areas where you can recruit.

2. Recruitment tools – Flyers, sign-up sheets, postcards and more.

3. Promote block-level exchange – those who fully register (beyond the e-mail update addresses you enter) can post and share information

4. Organize block activities – Promote general activity ideas or use special tools and resources provide by our Neighbor.be partners in your area.

Why $10 a year (first year is free)?

You deserve a real stake in the non-profit Neighbor.be effort. You get what you pay for and we want to serve you with value.

To have some assurance that you are who you say you are, block leaders need to register their credit card to get access to these enhanced services.

The trust we build from real identities is essential to this service. Block leaders also have the ability to temporarily suspend participants for any abusive behavior or close topics for further postings. Block leaders may also “follow” each other to share ideas on postings and news for spreading to your block.

Scholarships are available and community partners are encouraged to contact us about pre-paying for sets of block leader accounts for coordinated outreach efforts.

PAGE: About Neighborly

Neighborly is an experiment to connect nearest neighbors online. Breaking the ice online for the real world.

Participants connect via their “neighbor circle” – a dynamic directory of the nearest people registered in the system. In short, you are “friending” 20 to 100 neighbors for semi-private online exchange out of the glare of search engines.

Neighborly is led by volunteers. As a project of the non-profit E-Democracy.org, we encourage you to join our open source development team.

During this alpha testing period, the site is open to broad registration.

With the pending beta phase, group messaging will be limited to addresses within the city limits of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

E-Democracy.org hosts very public neighborhood-wide and

Page: Be safe

Not all neighbors are neighborly. Some should remain strangers.

Please use your common sense when using this service. For example, even if your neighbor circle is only the nearest 25 participants do not post that you will be out of town. Instead individually contact your nearest neighbors via Neighbor.be or directly.

Do not share any information on your profile or posts that you do not your neighbors to know. While our neighbor circles restrict access and our rule prohibit publicly quoting or publishing messages from a circle (down the road we plan explicitly public options), we cannot guarrantee that one your neighbors will not cut and paste information to another place on the Internet. We keep your exchanges out of Google search and automatically delete all topics and comments not saved by the topic owner after one year.

PAGE (Element?): Why Join (imagine talking bubbles from dots on a sample map)

Why be neighborly?

Imagine the possible exchanges.

“… see anything, my garage was broken into?”
“… yes, I’ll bring my famous bean dip to the potluck.”
“… welcome to the neighborhood.”
“… petitioning the city for a stop sign, what do ya’ll think?”
“… who can recommend a good plumber?”
“… spontaneous movie night for the kids, back of our garage.”

How would you like to be neighborly?
[ ] [Share Idea]

The technology is simple. The people are dynamic. Read this list of known [http://pages.e-democracy.org/block_activities block activities] that someone has done somewhere. Use neighborly to break the ice with those who live around you who also want to connect. Then enjoy the local life.

PAGE: Submit Local Online Groups

Do you know about an online group – neighborhood e-mail list, Facebook Group, etc. – where your neighbors connect?

While neighborly supports dynamic semi-private micro group communication, we want to help people find existing public and private places where they can connect with their local community online. If the external online group has a public web-feed, just like the public Issues Forums hosted by E-Democracy.org, we will even help promote your new group activity via our service so you can reach more people.

If you don’t have an online group for a “bounded” area near you like a neighborhood with hundreds or thousands of households, we have some tips and also plan to support “electronic block captains” wanting to organize a specific small area online.
