Ephel

Ephel is a language mixing functional programming and Ambient Calculus.

The functional paradigm is dedicated to the expression of behaviors, while the ambient paradigm is dedicated to structuring and topological management.

Functional programming layer

The functional layer is strongly statically typed with dependent types.

It covers:

  • the core lambda calculus
  • dependent function types,
  • dependent product types,
  • dependent coproduct types,
  • dependent records (can subsume sigma type) and
  • dependent recursive types.

Cf. works on Nehtra for the type checker and Mitch for the execution.

Module category.functor

First, we design the functor (quite classic) and, at the same time, we specify the laws to be verified by each incarnation. Otherwise, it's not a functor!

In the type map id a :=: a the operator :=: refers to the propositional equality.

Module option

We can now propose an implementation of optional expression. For this purpose we propose the type definion thanks to the postix operator _? in order to retrieve the expressivity offered by other langages like Swift, Dart or Kotlin for example.

Then we can propose a functor implementation dedicated to optional expressions. This implementation should provide a map but also an incarnation of the inner structure called Laws. Here proofs are really trivial proceeding by structural induction and applying refl for reflexivity.

A taste of Ephel Ambient Calculus layer

A basic ping pong game can be proposed using Ephel.

Topological approach

We identify three scoped ambient:

  • ping for the first player,
  • pong for the second player and
  • printer in charge of printing the winner

Functional approach

Since types are used for behavior selection this code can be revisited by removing all scoped Ambient for a simpler implementation using dependent types.

Ambient and physical distribution [WIP]

Since Ambient calculus targets concurrent systems with mobility we would like to distribute an ambient hierarchy physically.

For example, we can imagine the following ambient process

Ambient Scope and capability reduction

Each capability requires a specific scope:

  • in m: instructs the surrounding ambient to enter some sibling ambient m

  • out m: instructs the surrounding ambient to exit its parent ambient m

  • open m: instructs the surrounding ambient to dissolve the boundary of an ambient m

  • Note: `A@ in this formalism means ambient hosted in another physical process.

  • its sibling ambient

Reduction implementation sketch

Each scoped Ambient process is in charge of performing embedded capability and function application on the presence of events.

So, with this minimal representation, each Ambient can perform in, out and open with or without an objective move.

Functions are not represented in remote processes because the event used for its reduction is managed by the surrounding ambient.
