Please excuse me the follow up of #46, it's an unfixed issue for me.

I've got the same issue, it seems that @ndobromirov is working with Drupal, as I do, so please find my JSON API example here :
json-to-normalize2.txt
(sorry for the .txt, can't upload a json file)

The meta I think disappeared after normalization, and which I need, is : included.relationships.field_common_img_hero_desktop.data.meta.imageDerivatives and all of the sub-properties of meta btw.

FYI this as been pointed in an issue for the Drupal module, and the developer seems to be sure that this structure is valid https://www.drupal.org/project/jsonapi/issues/2993335#comment-12739049
I'm not an expert (as he seems to be) and hope you could find a solution or give some more explanation on this.
