Making DPGs Scalable

  • Enhanced Youth Engagement: Anushah Hossain's research on the participation of FOSS communities in Bangladesh which found that non-code contributions are critical in making software available to diverse, global populations. Her findings revealed that university students largely drove communities around technology projects and that participants are motivated to seek opportunities for "socialization, leadership, and technical skills-training, and reputation building."
  • Beyond Scale: How to Make Your Digital Development Program Sustainable, Digital Impact Alliance (2017).
  • Guidelines for Sustainable Open Source Communities in the Public Sector. DIGIT, European Commission (2020). Given the growing importance of open-source software in public administrations, the European Commission's Open Source Software Repository (OSOR) published dedicated Guidelines for Sustainable Open Source Communities in the Public Sector.
  • Key success factors of sustainable Open Source Communities. DIGIT, European Commission (2020). The purpose of this study is to lay the foundation for the Guidelines (mentioned above) by analyzing what determines the sustainability of public sector open-source communities. More specifically, the objective of this study is to identify the key success and failure factors behind the establishment of sustainable open-source communities in the public sector as well as to select and analyze relevant case studies of such communities.

  • Open source for government resources. Many local, regional, and national governments are engaged with open-source software and communities. This site provides a few resources that may help departments and agencies understand the value of open-source software and development communities within the public sector, as well as how public institutions can engage with, and implement similar initiatives to realize the greatest returns for their citizens and governments. 
  • iSPIRT (Indian Software Product Industry Round Table) has policy recommendations and other resources.
