Description

We use jekyll posts to host the Brigade Updates blog on oo.org. Right now, there's no way for visitors to subscribe to updates so they're alerted when new posts are published. We'd like a way for visitors to sign up for alerts via the channel of their choice (e.g. email, sms, and/or other).

Alerts should include...

  • Post title
  • Post date
  • Post excerpt

Other considerations

  • Contact info collection: should we include an option to opt-in to the OO email newsletter when signing up?
  • Is RSS the best approach?
Thank you!
  • Please document your design and tech decisions in your pull request so others can follow along and understand why we've made the decisions we have.
  • If you'd like feedback, input, or help, share your thoughts or question in this issue's comments.

Jekyll has a plugin that supports Atom instead of RSS. Atom is very similar and widely supported but RSS still seems to be more popular.

It seems both Atom 1.0 and RSS 2.0 are good enough, so I don't have strong opinion either way. We could always add both RSS and Atom support regardless of which one is added first.

We'd like a way for visitors to sign up for alerts via the channel of their choice (e.g. email, sms, and/or other).

In my understanding, email or sms subscription would be a separate feature though. RSS/Atom would allow the user to subscribe to the feed with their client of choice, but not to get an email notification unless the feed is paired with some third party service. I'm not sure if you had something in mind? Or do you have an example?
