In addition to MediaWiki, there exists BookStack, a self-hosted, open source alternative which more directly competes with Atlassian's Confluence Knowledge Base. I've also seen scientists from other labs recommending DokuWiki as both a more approachable and more maintainable alternative to MediaWiki.

See here for more alternatives.

Personally, after evaluating the three aforementioned options, I think we'll be happiest with BookStack. It's a bit beefier, but that's for a reason. It's packed with all sorts of cool features, chief among them being a beautiful built-in Markdown editor. What do you think, @sg-s?
