It is an unofficial project intended for personal learning and research purposes only. During the time that the ChatGPT desktop application was open-sourced, it received a lot of attention, and I would like to thank everyone for their support. However, as things have developed, there are two issues that seriously affect the project's next development plan:

  • Some people have used it for repackaging and selling for profit.
  • The name and icon of ChatGPT may be involved in infringement issues.

It's a shame that the project is going closed source... Parts of me understands your reasoning. But that just happens with any open source project tbf.

This project will not be closed to open source, but I will modify license to AGPL-3.0 and I will open a new project to implement more features.

The new app is also available to users for free in the future, but some of the premium features will require a fee to be unlocked. All current lencx/ChatGPT features will be made available for free in the new app, and more free new features will be supported.

The core code is closed source to better build a healthy development ecology, because in my country, there are a lot of people abusing this open source project to build paid versions.

I understand your concern of people abusing your open source project, however, don't you think they'll look for other open-source variants?

Could you point me towards other variants? I'm not aware of any and would like to have choices.

The biggest problem at the moment is that someone is using it to spread Trojans.

Just want to voice my support for your decision to go closed-source while leaving the current installer the way they are. Looking forward to updates on the new branch.

Is there any way to run multiple copies of ChatGPT Desktop for different accounts?

Will the new version include the option to use the new OpenAI API instead of the web version? It will be awesome to have the first great ChatGPT Desktop client at a fraction of the cost of the web version and with the wonderful features of this project (I would gladly pay for it and I am sure others like me, as a premium option to unlock)

Do the older versions of the ChatGPT App, like version 0.10.0, also have their API functionality removed?

Was the trojan incident only affecting windows (exe) compiled forks? There wasn't another incident with other OS such as OSX?

We need to ditch the say tts api. It sounds like my computer smoked cigarettes as a kid and sucked penises for cigarette money. The free google tts api has waaaaaaaay more voice options and language options and sounds very human. lol i apologies for my humor

I can understand that you want to fund your development with a future premium model.

Especially if you have people using your code for their own profits.

But I have to nitpick:

Trojans are not a reason to go closed source.

Trojans are a problem for very popular software (like this chatgpt desktop client) and not having a clear official download site (with a build system that is safe)

People will look for this application and will download the first thing they find in their search, and many don't understand how github works.

Even if you make it closed source, people will still take the software and package a trojan around it.

If you search "chatgpt download" you will quickly see the problem.

For me in germany the results were:

1.) a site hijacking search results to get ad views
2.) a german site which repackages open source software (for ad views and to bundle it with adware)
3.) this github project
4.) openai page explaining chatgpt

after that the results get worse.

official app is being rolled out to macOS

We're rolling out the macOS app to Plus users starting today, and we will make it more broadly available in the coming weeks. We also plan to launch a Windows version later this year.
