It would be nice to have less dependency on command line tools. We should be able to get at the X11 stuff through GTK. (Look at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=127335 for the program that gets an arbitrary window area, for example.)

There are gems for interfacing with libav. Some appear to be for playing only, but others may be more complete (based on descriptions).
