polyglot notebook error CS0103: The name 'Kernel' does not exist in the current context

EDIT: I should specify that I am on OSX intel.
I am trying to run some code that uses the "Kernel" in a csharp cell. I believe this was working and then stopped because I have the output from running this function the first time.

I have tried

• restarting the kernel
• restarted vscode
• created a new notebook
• restarted computer
• installing
  • #r "nuget:Microsoft.DotNet.Interactive,1.0.0-beta.23509.3"

Here is the line that is failing:

return Kernel.Root.SendAsync(new SendEditableCode("mermaid", mermaidMarkdown.ToString()));

You'll need using Microsoft.DotNet.Interactive;.
