recipes for other platforms?

Is there a way that we can convert Chef recipes to other platforms?
I noticed that some recipes do not work on Ubuntu due to different package names. It works okay on Centos.

the point of chef is that they should be agnostic to os in many cases.

if not they should be changed ....
