I have seen at least one case where an author removed, for example, a variation from the list, but not the corresponding strain.

We could discuss perhaps presenting interconnected data like this, e.g. strain, gene, variation, in a single table so that if authors would have the option to remove all entities at once.

This is quite involved and it will have effects on the UI.
Requires more computation and need of mock-ups from Kimberly and Daniela.
