There are no instructions in the README or CONTRIBUTING documents about creating a virtual environment for development. Do you want contributors to use Python's virtual environment (venv) or do you want to use conda environments or something else? This should be discussed in the README, CONTRIBUTING, and/or Sphinx documentation along with steps on how to create and setup the environment.

The CONTRIBUTING.md and documentation have been updated with virtual environment instructions.
