I don't think that Handbrake can convert SDR to HDR?
If not, it would be nice to see it implemented on some new release.

this is like saying we add a feature to handbrake that makes a Black and White video to Color lol. It'd require far more work beyond the scope of handbrake.

Not really, it's close to upscalling, which Handbrake does very well.
A Dune network player that has only a tiny chip does it already.

Provide links for references, is it just marketing jargon? Have you extracted the frame directly from these players and compare the colorspace if it is indeed HDR? Do you have technical/data sheet specs you can link to this chip so it can be replicated?

Highly doubt "the chip" converts SDR to HDR, with this little information, anyone can imply anything, like perhaps, it's just a simple gamma, contrast or saturation boost, not SDR to HDR which adds more colors (hence the black and white to color analogy) if that's what you want it has been discussed before: #3987

I have this player, and it indeed outputs HDR. My video processor (an Envy) confirms it:

Visually, it's quite good already. It really pulls out black details.

It does not magically changes colors of course. Even though the colorspace appears to be 2020, the displayed colors are the same as the original, it's just the container that changes.

But, as I said, the better black details are really welcome.
