Optimally, these are trivial:

{-# LANGUAGE GeneralizedNewtypeDeriving #-}
deriving instance Serialize a => Serialize (Const a)
deriving instance Serialize a => Serialize (Identity a)

But I have no idea what complications might be introduced by the need for legacy support; base >= 4.4 is a long, long time ago!
